  • Fishing charter off Anna Maria Island on March 20 navigated unexpected weather, with wind speed forecasts proving inaccurate.
  • Captain Randall, leveraging over a decade of experience, adjusted to northeast winds to find better fishing spots.
  • Initial focus on bottom fishing at reefs in 40 feet of water; first location offered minimal catch, leading to a move.
  • Second reef yielded over a dozen keeper-size fish, including mangrove snapper, and nearly 20 groupers, though many were not season-appropriate or too small.
  • Encounter with a school of tuna and a kingfish led to brief engagements, but both fish ultimately escaped.
  • The day ended with the crew returning to the dock to prepare the catch, highlighting the unpredictability and potential rewards of fishing.

The charter’s goal, prompted by a customer’s wish to “bring home dinner”, led them to focus on bottom fishing at the reefs in 40 feet of water along Florida’s west coast. The initial location offered minimal success, prompting a strategic move to a second reef.

Here, the crew found better luck, catching over a dozen keeper-size fish, including mangrove snapper, and nearly 20 groupers, although many were not in season or too small.

Highlighting the day’s unpredictability, a school of tuna approached the boat, leading to a brief but unsuccessful attempt to hook one.

Later, a kingfish was hooked but also escaped after a short fight.

The day concluded with a return to the dock to prepare the catch, underscoring the unpredictable nature of fishing but also the potential for success with experience and adaptability.
