March is the Start of Snook Season on Florida's Nature Coast March is the start of Snook fishing season here in Florida, and that means the weather has finally turned nice! The fish start feeding aggressively when the water temperatures reach 70 degrees, so it's time to go catching. Drifting the pristine flats of Citrus County will continue to produce Sea Trout with many "Gators" being caught over the 19 inch limit. The Redfish bite will continue to be hot along the outside edges of rocky shorelines, most points and oyster bars. Their average size will be in the 25" to 35" range, with a few bigger fish mixed in. As the water warms up, they will move into shallower water around mangrove shorelines and seagrass flats. You can target them with live bait, cut bait or lures. Anglers will also find good numbers of Trout around similar areas. The average size will be in the 18" to 22" range, with a few bigger fish mixed in. Cut bait, live bait and lures all work well for trout.For both Redfish and Trout, I recommend using 20-30 lb test line on a spinning reel or baitcasting reel. This will give you the strength you need in case you hook into a big fish, while still allowing you to have some fun fighting them.
