Fishing Tips for January:  Homosassa Winter Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, and Speckled Trout

The Homosassa Fishing area is well known for its large variety of fish species. In January, you can target sheepshead, trout and mangrove snapper. Each of these fish can be caught in different ways, depending on where you are fishing.

Sheepshead can be caught using live bait or shrimp near offshore rock piles. The sheepshead migrate into the same grounds as the gag grouper are where on for the fall months. The best way to catch these tasty fish is to use a small quarter oz hook with a shrimp and send it down to the bottom. There will still be a few gag grouper hanging around so hang on tight!

Speckled Trout can be caught with popping and live bait in the cooler water temperatures closer inshore. During the winter the months it will defiantly be quality over quaintly. The Homosassa area is blessed with an abundance of Trout fishing opportunities. Here are some tips to help you put more trout in the cooler this winter.Targeting Trout in January:- Look for deep holes near the passes and around rocky areas. These areas will hold baitfish and in turn hold trout.- Live Shrimp or Pinfish fished under a popping cork is always a great bet.- Use lighter tackle when targeting trout in the winter months, this will help you feel the bite better and also result in more hookups.
