The fishing in Crystal River and Homosassa Florida has been great this month! Cobia, Speckled Trout, and Redfish have all been biting well. Here is a fishing report for the month of May that will give you an idea of what to expect when you come down to fish.

Catching Cobia

For those who want to catch cobia fish May is the month! With water temps now in close to 80 degrees these migratory fish have moved into the West Coast of Florida. Cobia can be caught while bottom fishing, live baiting, or even trolling. Cobia average between 20-60 pounds. When the bite gets slow, we turn to chumming and free lining bait out to pull the fish to us. Look for these cobias to be about till mid-June.

Catching Redfish and Speckled Trout

Speckled trout and redfish have been biting well in the flats this month in about six to ten feet of water. Live bait has been working well for both species. For speckled trout, use live bait like shrimp under a cork. For redfish, use larger live bait fish like pinfish or cut bait free lined.

Both speckled trout and redfish can also be caught using artificial lures. For speckled trout, use a soft plastic lure that imitates a small bait fish. For redfish, use a larger soft plastic lure or a hard bait like a spinnerbait.

Catching Grouper

The Grouper Season opens on the first of June.  These fish have been biting well in the deep water offshore. Use live bait or cut bait on a bottom rig to catch these fish. One of the best ways to catch these shallow water groupers is trolling deep diving hard lures. The most productive lures have been the Cajun Thunder, Lipped Mullet, and Xcalibur.

And don’t forget about Scallop Season, it open on the first of July. We will start filling the book up this month. So, if you want to get in on the action sign up now. The Florida Fishing Company is your number one stop for all your Florida Fishing and Scalloping needs!
